In this example, politics is only a theme; Therefore, the sentence has a singular verb. SUBJECT-VERBE RULE #2 Two or more singular subjects that are linked by or (or not) as a single compound subject and therefore use a single verb to accept. Be vigilant for preposition phrases placed between the subject and the verb, and immediately identify the name in the sentence as the object of a preposition: An object of a preposition can NEVER be a subject game. Note: The following sentences are also considered collective nouns and therefore singular subjects. You can check the verb by replacing the pronoun for the compound subject. And finally, sometimes creating a question will lead to the subject following the verb too. Identify the subject here, then select the verb that corresponds to it (singular or plural). 7. Names such as citizens, mathematics, dollars, measles and news require singular verbs.
4. Remember the indeterminate Pronoun EXCEPTIONS, which is dealt with in section 3.5, p.18: Some, Any, None, All and Most. The number of these subjects is influenced by a prepositionphrase between the subject and the verb.
